Julian Gewirtz is a scholar, practitioner, and former government official focusing on China, US-China relations, and US foreign policy. He is a Senior Research Scholar at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, a Senior Fellow at the Asia Society’s Center on US-China Relations, a member of the Faculty Advisory Committee of Columbia University's Center on Global Energy Policy, and a non-resident fellow at Harvard University’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.

He served in senior policymaking roles during the Biden Administration, including Senior Director for China and Taiwan Affairs at the White House National Security Council, Senior Advisor to the Principal Deputy National Security Advisor, and Deputy China Coordinator at the State Department.

Julian is the author of several books, including Never Turn Back: China and the Forbidden History of the 1980s and Unlikely Partners: Chinese Reformers, Western Economists, and the Making of Global China.

Julian received his doctorate in history from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar, and his undergraduate degree from Harvard College.
