Vali is the Majid Khadduri Professor of International Affairs and Middle East Studies at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, where he also served as dean. He is a non-resident senior fellow at Atlantic Council’s South Asia Center.

Vali has advised senior American policymakers, world leaders and businesses, including the president, secretary of state, senior members of Congress and presidential campaigns. He served as senior advisor to US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Ambassador Richard Holbrooke.

Vali holds a PhD in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a master's degree in international economics and Middle East studies from Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and a BA in international relations summa cum laude from Tufts University. He was initiated into Phi Beta Kappa in 1983.

Vali is the author of books including The Shia Revival: How Conflicts within Islam will Shape the Future; The Dispensable Nation: American Foreign Policy in Retreat; and Forces of Fortune: The Rise of a New Middle Class and How it Will Change Our World. He has written for publications including The New York Times, Foreign Affairs, The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post, among others.
