Mala Gaonkar

Mala is the former managing director of US-based investment firm Lone Pine Capital, where she was the portfolio manager for the firm’s technology, media, internet and telecommunications interests. In early 2022, she founded SurgoCap, an investment firm focused on the long-term and disruptive impacts of technology innovation across global markets.
She has also served as a consultant at the World Bank in Mongolia, working with a United Nations team on the privatisation of industry in that country.
After completing her MBA at Harvard Business School, where was awarded a Kauffmann Fellowship, she joined The Boston Consulting Group, working out of their Munich and Hong Kong offices. She has also worked at Chase Capital Partners in New York City, where she researched investments in internet and technology companies.
She is a founding trustee of Ariadne Labs (a health initiative of Harvard University), a trustee of the Tate Modern, the Clinton Health Access Initiative, and the Paris Review Foundation, and is a founding trustee of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Technology. Mala also recently joined the Advisory Board of The Economist.
